There are so many people who are actually majored in music, or study music regularly for fun. These people might already have great knowledge of music but their problem is they can not transfer the main and deep definition of it. We call these people music scholars. They are the ones that can explain every single detail in music theory or any other things related to music but they never can explain and transfer the real definition of each piece. For this part we need a interpreter a person who knows the language and enough knowledge of it to be able to transfer it to the audience.
Thus, we need some other people who can actually transfer each pieces message for the others. They are the ones that we call as musicians. A musician can translate the real meaning of each piece through her/his instrument. They use instruments as different equipments to interpret different things for other people. This ability just comes from these people, however they can be less educated from some of the music scholars. It is not really about your knowledge,it is mostly an ability;an ability that not everyone has it. There is something unique about them. which is learning how to make the best by combining different techniques, passion, and also knowledge through an instrument.
That is why all the musician are somehow music scholars because in order to learn different techniques they need to have enough knowledge of it.But this case does not work for music scholars! There is no such a rule that music scholar should be musicians!!! They might even have better knowledge but it does not mean they have the ability...
That's an interesting way to look at the difference between a musician and a music scholar. I agree with you that a musician can be seen as someone who 'translates the real meaning of each piece through her/ his instrument'. The musician gives the music his/her own interpretation.
